Welcome to My Friends' Story

They say an elephant never forgets, well this one can't remember, at least not before the time he knew he was an elephant. Sat on a shelf in the dark when the lights came on. Others looked like him, but just sat there. He tried talking, got no response. Least not from them. There were people coming, looking, then going, more looking, then the lights went down. 6 days a week, always the same. Only once did he catch someone's eye. They came over, picked him up, smiled. Then it was all dark. And suddenly he emerged somewhere totally different. And there were others a bit like him.

There's a basket in the corner. I used to live there. Under a lot of other friends. Nobody to talk to. Nothing to see or do, just the odd noise from outside. One day, after such a long time, a hand came in and started to pull us out, one by one. I was scared out of my mind. At least it had been quiet in there. Then a friendly face and I got put down next to some creatures who asked me my name, and what I did.
