Colonsay-

Nothing much happens here, that's really good. Walking, sea and coast. Stay on a croft for B+B. Combine it with a visit to Isla www.colonsay.org.uk

Mull & Iona

Best reached by Ferry from Oban. There is another smaller ferry, but you can't easily reach it. Take your car, or go on a day boat trip
Don't underestimate distances, to go round the island, most roads go round the coast, not over the middle. Craignure to Fionnphort is 56Km, and takes about a hour.
Main town is Tobermory. Main attractions, apart from Iona are Fingal's cave and whale watching

Travel

>

Fly to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness or Aberdeen
Trains mainly run N-S in Scotland, few E-W routes exist. The routes are scenic, but the journey times may be quite long e.g. London-Inverness between 8-9 hours, and around 100€ each way. Roads are generally good, journeys round lochs may make distances longer than you planned for (to Oban or Kennacraig for the ferries). Some trunk roads can be very busy (A9, A96)

Languages

You'll find English spoken everywhere. On the wesstern isles, people's everyday language may well be Gaelic. In other areas there are Scots dialects (a pejorative term in itself), related to English, but not so intelligible for the outsider (e.g. Doric in the North-East.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England

has much to offer the tourist apart from London and the standard brochure stuff.

Northumberland

Not just somewhere to drive through on the way to Scotland!

Farne Islands-

not to be missed on a trip to/ through Northumberland. Handy from/ to the Newcastle ferry terminal. Boats from Seahouses. Seabirds (Puffins migrate away mid-summer), also seals. Eat at the Ship in Seahouses or choose from the seemingly endless number of chip shops.

General Info

Language

Welsh is widely spoken as people's everyday language. It is not a dialet of, nor even that closely related to English, more to Breton and Cornish. Learn a little and find out how descriptive some of the place names are. Everyone speaks English, but may be a little rusty if they don't use it every day.

Trains

Wales has something special for the railway fan, a high number of Narrow Gauge Railways. Some just short stretches, but some going a considerable distance. Take in at least two!
