Set up in 2000 as a
"nanoaquarium" experiment, although this size is not really that "nano".
It first had a plenum made by glueing feet (U-pvc
tube or
the
like) to
a plastic plate with holes to raise this 1cm or so above the base.
This had a layer of coarse filter wool over it to stop the
sand and broken coral dropping through or getting round the edges.
When
changing size I used undergravel filter plates from Eheim instead. Just
no outlet!
The first system used small broken coral pieces, covered by
fine coral
sand. The next timeI just used coral sand, since more recent
ideas suggest the 2 layers are unnecessary.
Lighting: 1x 14W 10000K tube. I tried 2
tubes with in- hood controller, but it just got too hot- the
water was soon up to and
over 30°C. Using an external controller and 2 14W tubes gave a
better light.
Heating: None- but the tankwas
in a centrally heated apartment.
Active filtration: None- A small Eheim filter, with or
without
foam
cartridge, was better than a recirculating pump, since
it allowed a better, wider surface flow.
Later I added a small external hang-on box filter from
Eheim, the
smallest Sander skimmer fit just nicely in it.
Nov. 2010 changed to 96L aquarium- using Eheim filter
plates, coarse coral and fine coral sand on top.
